Exploring the Many Ways to Use Microgreens: From Food to Beauty Products

At Penn Grows, we’re always excited to explore the versatile world of microgreens and how they can enhance various aspects of our lives. Recently, we were thrilled to be mentioned in a fantastic piece by On the Grow, which highlighted our innovative approach to using microgreens in both the food and beauty industries. Today, we want to share our journey and the creative ways we’ve been incorporating microgreens into our products.

The Nutritional Power of Microgreens

Microgreens are tiny but mighty. These young vegetable greens are harvested just after the first true leaves have developed, and they’re packed with nutrients. They contain higher concentrations of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants compared to their mature counterparts, making them a powerful addition to any diet. At Penn Grows, we cultivate a variety of microgreens, including:

  • Broccoli
  • Arugula
  • Red Acre Cabbage
  • Wasabi
  • Sunflower
  • Red Kale
  • Rambo Purple Radish
  • Cantaloupe
  • Daikon Radish
  • Hong Vit Radish
  • Spicy Brown Mustard
  • Red Garnet Amaranth
  • China Rose Radish
  • Curled Cress
  • Pea Shoots
  • Wheatgrass

Our microgreens are not only nutritious but also incredibly flavorful, adding a fresh and vibrant touch to any dish.

From Farm to Beauty: The Birth of Microglams

While microgreens are typically associated with culinary uses, we saw an opportunity to expand their potential. That’s how Microglams was born—a side project where we integrate our nutrient-dense microgreens into beauty products.

Our business trio, Wallito, Mitch, and Gloria, combined their skills to venture into this exciting new territory. Gloria leads the development of our beauty products, crafting face masks and sugar scrubs that harness the natural benefits of microgreens. Meanwhile, Mitch and Wallito focus on growing and marketing our microgreens for food consumption.

Why Microgreens in Beauty Products?

Microgreens are rich in vitamins and antioxidants, which are known to benefit the skin. Our signature product, the Wasabi Rose Clay Mask, combines the detoxifying properties of clay with the rejuvenating effects of microgreens. The result is a natural and effective skincare product that nourishes and revitalizes the skin.

Microgreens for Our Cold-Blooded Friends

Microgreens aren’t just for humans—they’re also great for our cold-blooded friends! We love hearing from customers who grow microgreens for their pets. For instance, Wallito from Penn Grows shared that various types of microgreens are perfect for Bearded Dragons.

  • Micro Kale is highlighted for its vitamin A, C, and K content, though it should be given in moderation due to oxalate levels.
  • Broccoli Microgreens and Radish Microgreens are also favorites, rich in vitamins A, B, C, E, and K, and providing essential minerals like iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and zinc.
  • Arugula is another microgreen enjoyed by Bearded Dragons, often the same microgreens grown for humans.

Showcasing at Farmers Markets

One of our favorite ways to connect with our community is through local farmers markets. It’s here that we showcase both our edible microgreens and our Microglams beauty products. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with customers appreciating the innovative approach and the high quality of our offerings.
